New patent for self-repossessing vehicles sparks controversy | iHeart’s WHO Radio Des Moines, Iowa | 3/9/23

iHeart’s WHO Radio asked John Rizvi to come on the air in Des Moines, IA to discuss a recent patent application by Ford. Ford’s patent application shows a vehicle that repossesses itself if the owner doesn’t make car payments. John, known as the patent professor, explained how turning off air conditioning, locking you out of your car, and emitting an incessant unpleasant sound from the car radio until you call your bank are just a few options before repossessing the vehicle completely. John mentioned that the patent doesn’t state the sound, as a good patent attorney keeps things broad, so it could be annoying.

John also talked about how the vehicle can call the police by itself in case the owner interferes in the repossession process. It’s also possible for malfunctions to occur in the system, such as controlling the brakes, accelerator, lights, cruise control, and windows, leading to disastrous results. John advises vehicle owners to insist and get it in writing that Ford has removed all programming enabling them to repossess the vehicle by itself.

Although Ford says it has no current plans to deploy this technology, the patent’s publication has caused quite an uproar. John urged Ford to develop good ideas that are good for society in general and also protect new ideas that he deems useful for society.
